A reading every 10 seconds for 5 minutes · hot plate setting held constant · pure water, starting at room temperature
Pour a volume into the beaker and switch the plate on. Every other thing about the setup stays the same.
Water in the beaker
HOT PLATE45 W— same dial setting every run
Temperature (°C) every 10 s
Water temperature in degrees Celsius at each time, one column per volume
Heating rate vs volume
Rate is the total rise divided by the 5 minutes, the way you would work it out from the table.
How to use this simulation
Pick a volume from the buttons in the Water in the beaker panel. The hot plate always holds the same 45 W setting.
Press Turn on the hot plate and watch the water heat up on the beaker, with the thermometer and the temperature graph updating together.
Use the How fast to run the 5 minutes dropdown to watch in real time or speed things up, since a full run is 5 simulated minutes.
Each run adds a column to the Temperature every 10 s table and a line to the temperature-vs-time graph, so you can compare volumes directly.
Once you've tried a few volumes, check the Heating rate vs volume graph. Turn on Plot the rate against 1/volume to straighten the curve into a line.
Turn on Add reading error to see realistic thermometer scatter, or Let the beaker lose heat to the room to see the lines bend instead of staying straight.
Press Reset to run the current volume again, Clear all runs to wipe the table and graphs, or Copy data to copy your results for a spreadsheet.
